MIGNOGNA Surname Page My Mignogna Family I am the daughter of Raymond Mignogna, son of Frank Mignogna, son of Michael and Maddalena Montagno Mignogna. Michael and Maddalena were both born in Italy. Michael was born in Riccia, and Maddalena in Foggia. We think in general, the Mignogna's were from the province of Foggia, and alot of the emails I've received from other Mignogna's seem to have their relatives come from the same area. Michael was the son of Giuseppe Mignogna and Nastagita Scarnata. I believe they came to the States when Michael was a very young child. It looks now like Michael came alone when he was young, worked and brought his parent's and sister over later. Maddalena came over as an adult. She had one brother and one sister who came over, too. Her parent's stayed in Italy. I got this map from Mapquest. What does "Mignogna" mean? Frankly, I'm not entirely certain. I've looked through both Italian and French dictionaries, and there are several words in each that begin with "migno". I've heard people say it means "cute". Why look in French dictionaries? Well, there's some "evidence" that the Mignogna's came from France. My dad tells a story of how in the late 60's or early 70's, when my grandparents (Elizabeth and Frank Mignogna) were living in the Bronx, they all the sudden started receiving phone calls in the middle of the night for a Dr. Frank Mignogna. My grandfather was a mechanic. They eventually decided to look in the phone book, and sure enough, there was an office number for one Dr. Frank Mignogna listed right with my grandfather's number. My grandparent's got in touch with this guy who it turns out was into genealogy as well. Apparently, he's been able to trace back the Mignogna's about 500 years to France. Neat, right? Well, as fas as I know, this Dr. Frank Mignogna is still alive and practicing and living in New Jersey. I've sent him a couple letters, and still have yet to hear from him.
